Inula (Sweet) Essential Oil
Inula graveolens
Sweet Inula is steam distilled from the flowering herb, a shrub with slim yellow flowers that grows in dry, rocky ground. Ours is certified organic and comes from Corsica or Morocco. Inula graveolens gives an earthy, fresh, sweet, camphor-like oil.
The chemistry is unusual for how ester-heavy it is. Bornyl acetate leads, typically 46-63% in our batches, with borneol close behind at about 9-28% and a little camphene around 3-7%. Bornyl acetate and borneol are both loved for their sedative, calming character, and borneol is one of those monoterpenols known for calming inflammation. Aromatherapists reach for Sweet Inula for its calming and balancing qualities, and for the way it supports healthy lung activity.
