Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil

Lemon Myrtle is steam distilled from the leaves of Backhousia citriodora, a tree in the Myrtaceae family. The batches on this page have come from organically grown material in Australia and Malaysia.

The chemistry here is remarkably single-minded. Aldehydes make up around 91% of the oil, and nearly all of that is citral, which is really two closely related molecules working together: geranial (typically 44-50% in our batches) and neral (typically 32-43%). That citral pair is what gives Lemon Myrtle its intensely bright, lemony aroma, more lemon than lemon itself. Smaller amounts of isoneral, isogeranial, geraniol, and linalool fill in around the edges.
