Rhododendron anthopogon
Rhododendron anthopogon grows high in the Himalayas, and the leaves are what get distilled. Ours is wildcrafted in Nepal and steam distilled, with a sweet, fresh, herbaceous aroma that has a soft balsamic, floral edge.
The chemistry is mostly monoterpenes, around 63% of the oil on average. α-Pinene leads the way, typically 24-32% in our batches, followed by β-pinene at about 11-15% and limonene at 7-12%. α-Pinene and β-pinene are both loved for their antimicrobial character, and limonene is an antioxidant that supports the skin. There is also a nice band of sesquiterpenes (about 25% on average), which gives the oil its rounded, grounded quality. Rhododendron is valued in aromatherapy as an antispasmodic and antioxidant oil.
