White Fir Essential Oil
Abies concolor
White Fir (Abies concolor) is steam distilled from the needles of this Pinaceae tree. Ours is wildcrafted in the United States, and it smells the way you would hope: woodsy, piney, a little camphoraceous.
The chemistry is mostly monoterpenes, averaging around 78% across our batches. Beta-pinene leads, typically 11-40% in our batches, with alpha-pinene at 8-18% and camphene at 8-20%. Those monoterpenes carry the fresh forest part of the aroma, and they are valued for antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Then there is bornyl acetate, an ester, typically 9-24%. Bornyl acetate is the calming, soothing piece of the picture, and it is part of why White Fir is loved as an analgesic and antispasmodic oil, comforting after a long day of exertion.
