Kombo Butter
Pycnanthus angolensis
Kombo butter is cold pressed from the seeds of Pycnanthus angolensis, a West African tree in the nutmeg family. You'll sometimes hear it called African Nutmeg. Our batches have come from wildcrafted trees in Ghana, with one from Togo.
The color runs dark brown to reddish, and the aroma is nutty and earthy, warm and woodsy. It's a distinctive butter, not a quiet one. Kombo is anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant, and it's the one I reach for when a blend is meant to soothe aching joints and tired muscles. It's also described as anti-allergic and antiseptic. It melts beautifully with other butters like shea and cocoa. Shelf life is about five years. A patch test for sensitivity is a good idea.
Every batch we receive is logged on this page with its origin and best-by date, and certificates of analysis are available to download where we have them.
